Description
I think one great line of record collecting is when initial issues of LP covers or picture sleeves are changed for various reasons: complaints from record company executives, from censors, from the buying public or due to errors in production. Remember the Beatles “Butcher Cover” and the Mamas & Papas “Toilet Cover”? Or how about the Dave Clark Five “No-Instruments” Cover? And don’t forget Three Dog Night’s “Nude” Cover and their “Birthing” Cover and Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Flames” Cover for the “Street Survivors” LP that was replaced with no flames.
In this auction is another example of an original and replacement picture sleeve.
In this auction:
· “DAYBREAK” b/w “Down” by Harry Nilsson
· This is RCA Records APBO-0246.
· It was released in 1974.
· This single was “FROM THE SOUNDTRACK ALBUM of the APPLE FILM SON OF DRACULA STARRING HARRY NILSSON AND RINGO STARR”
· That LP had a die-cut bat-wings cover of Nilsson in his cape similar to the image on the picture sleeves in this auction.
· This auction contains 2 RCA Records Picture Sleeves.
· One has the original image and the other has the replacement image.
· From what I’ve been able to find out, the ORIGINAL PICTURE SLEEVE was issued with an image that showed a full-frontal image of Harry Nilsson’s face. But this image was A) not a very scary image of a vampire in a Dracula cape, and B) not the same image of Harry Nilsson as on the cover of the LP.
· Therefore, a REPLACEMENT PICTURE SLEEVE was produced that had the SAME IMAGE of Harry Nilsson AS ON THE ORIGINAL LP COVER. That image has his chin tucked down in a much scarier “Dracula pose”, but doesn’t show his face as clearly as the original picture sleeve did.
· On the other hand, I heard at a record show that the reverse is true, that the picture sleeve showing Nilsson’s full face was the replacement sleeve, not vice versa. That story says that Harry demanded that RCA change the sleeve to show his full face because A) HE was the artist on the picture sleeve of his songs and that justified a good full image of his face, and B) the picture sleeve did not have to have his same image as the LP cover (with tucked down chin), because the LP with that cover was promoting the entire soundtrack, not exclusively his own tunes as on the 45 RPM single.
· Whatever is the real reason, we end up with 2 different images for the same picture sleeve/record.
· The image of Ringo Starr in the lower right side of the picture sleeve remained unchanged.
· Both PICTURE SLEEVES are in VG+ CONDITION with light overall wear. These primarily black sleeves were prone to show wear very easily, but not so much on these two sleeves.
· The VINYL: Only 1 record is included in this auction. It is in VG CONDITION with some very light surface hairlines/scuffs and light to moderate label wear.
An unusual set of Beatles-related picture sleeves to add to your vinyl collection!
