While they only had two big hits, the Beau Brummels were one of the most important and underrated American groups of the 1960s. They were the 1st U.S. unit of any sort to successfully respond to the British Invasion. They were arguably the 1st folk-rock group, even predating the Byrds, and also anticipated some key elements of the San Francisco psychedelic sound with their soaring harmonies and exuberant melodies.

Before they finally reached the end of the string, they were also among the 1st bands to embrace and record country-rock, in 1968, with the highly acclaimed "Bradley's Barn" -a year before The Byrds would turn in that direction.

Just before that, though, came their unquestionable masterpiece. As a trio, the group recorded their most critically acclaimed and most experimental album in 1967, TRIANGLE...

This superb Psych/Folk album  - recorded around the same time as The Byrds were putting together "Younger than Yesterday" - was one of the most overlooked pieces of psychedelia and one of the most beautiful, delicately produced, arranged and played pieces of hallucinogenic rock; with uncanny, ethereal harmonies, ringing and twanging guitars and dreamlike songwrting to match, TRIANGLE remains an unsurpassed period masterpiece.

Unique in style and feel, perhaps the closest things happening around that time were "Something Else" and "Village Green Preservation Society" by THE KINKS and "Magic People" by THE PAUPERS, out of Canada; which isn't to say that Triangle is just like those LPs by any means. Brian Wilson also dipped his toes into similar waters on "SMiLE", though it went unheard at the time.

Ron Elliot's mystical songwriting, Sal Valentino's singular voice and Ron Meagher's evocative, atmosphere-laden arrangements combined to create something far greater and deeper than a mere sum-of parts. a good deal of the magic was in the understated quality and vision-focus of the gently haunted, richly baroque world created in Triangle.

Words and comparisons are simply not up to evoking the wonder and charm of this LP. I've never seen a review that successfully describes the sound and feel - and I can't seem to either, here; perhaps this one is ultimately beyond words...

Buried commercially by the likes of "Sgt. Pepper", Triangle shared its premise of songs loosely united by a common theme - in this case, a ruminative dream cycle. The exquisite "Magic Hollow", graced by Van Dyke Parks' delicate harpsichord, was one of the LP's highlights. Plucked as a single, it barely dented the charts, yet remains one of the most beautiful tunes in the entire Brummels canon.

The album's first five songs -- "Are You Happy", "Only Dreaming Now", "Painter of Women", "Keeper of Time" and "It Won't Get Better" - form a surprisingly coherent and cohesive whole despite markedly individual characters. "Dreaming"'s submerged accordion transports the listener to Paris' Montmartre, while "Painter" suggests the shifting sands of the Middle East. Elliott's lyric imagery in these two songs and (yes, we finally get to it) the superlative, uncanny gem-of-gems: "The Wolf of Velvet Fortune" - is particularly striking, and Sal Valentino's richly expressive voice elevates all three to sublime heights ...an inner triangle within the Triangle.
