Description
Originally released in 1979, this is the first time it’s been reissued on vinyl. I ordered a stack out of respect for the Soul Note label- more often than not I love what this label puts out (there are of course, exceptions). This one was beyond what I expected (in a good way), probably because I didn’t peek at the band. Ken McIntyre plays alto and some bassoon flute. Grachan Moncur III is on trombone. That alone was enough for me to curb my excitement and listen to my copy.
Tight musicianship, and two things I love when avant-garde / free jazz or post bop bands do: a) play with slower tempos to keep us - the consumers of the music - engaged and on edge. And, of course / kinda similar; b) although defined in the aforementioned categories, the band still makes it a point to create grooves that your body wants to move to. Whether they call it the blues, I don’t care. I know it when I hear it and this band seemed to prioritize that.
