Begin to Feel
by Russ Saul

Scarce anonymous '70s country-pop album
on a notable "tax scam" label

Los Angeles: Tribute Records, 1977. LR-1008. Stereo LP. Original pressing. Excellent condition with very light wear to the B side in Good sleeve with foxing on back cover, a bit of ring wear on front cover, some light edge creases, outer edge a bit worn.

"Russ Saul" recorded a very heartfelt, kind of pathetic, rough-around-the-edges but inspired collection of country songs that was issued just barely-- mostly going to warehouses and being destroyed-- as a write-off by a record label solely created for tax purposes. The artist's real name is unknown. He probably had sent demos out and had this album pressed without his knowledge, as was the habit of many such labels. Song titles seem to have been picked with no reference to the songs themselves. The mastering job is abysmal and the recording quality isn't great, but somehow, a number of these songs manage to shine. Perhaps the best, "Just to Say Goodbye," was reissued as part of the Enjoy the Experience compilation that accompanied the book of the same name. "Leaving Has Hurt" was covered by The Zip Code Revue. "I Need Him" was covered by the Zip Code Rapists in the early '90s. Both songs could have been hits if recorded more competently and performed a bit less pleadingly. Scarce.
