Description

For Auction - Six 1953 voice dictation discs by the General Plant Supervisor/Manager at the Bell Telephone Labs, Columbus (Adams), central office. I do not know who this individual might have been?? These 7-inch film-like flexible discs were used starting about 1949 on the "Disc Edison Voicewriter". The discs themselves were called "ear-tuned jewel-action" and play at 16 RPM. These six dictation discs were made by the General Plant Supervisor/Manager apparently for his secretary to prepare letters for various concerns/situations. I have listened to some on each of the six discs. One 1953 dictation letter refers to project 11102, a power plant addition to the Columbus Adams facility which had a tentative completion date of 1955. This particular letter was requesting an earlier completion date be done by the contractor. Another letter refers to a fire at AT&T that caused a service outage. Some of the Bell facilities mentioned include Marietta, Zanesville, Chillocothe, Toledo, Dayton, etc. Testing out 1.5 KV machines is mentioned, repeater stations, switchboards, relays, Western Electric, etc. The six discs vary as to their audio quality. There are some scratches on the discs and I encountered some skips. I believe a good cleaning of the discs would improve the audio performance. I listened to a small amount of the total dictation. I used a standard turntable at 16 RPM.
