Description

An original UK Stereo 1st pressing from 1961 - the HIGHLIGHTS. So, why not from Xmas'59 if 1st pressing? Well, one would suspect that the entire shipment of BEN-HUR LPs in 1960 were ALL in Mono. Stereo was a brand new format in 1960 and it was only just entering the market place. This particular copy would have been from the very 1st initial batch of stereos in 1961. Matrix 1/2. Stampers 1A/1P - which tells us this is about as early a copy as is humanly possible to find in stereo. Labels are consistent with 1st pressing and DO NOT mention 'Sold In The UK'. They also mention "STEREO" in large format and DO NOT mention 'recording 1st published' [as you would find on mid-sixties copies]. The tax code they're stamped with is "OT" which equates to 1961. Worth noting this is extremely heavy pressed vinyl - c.180 grams [!]. The vinyl comes housed in an original Stereo G&L cover with exposed flipbacks. And there's an origina Emitex inner too.
Vinyl (Ex/Ex+) In superb condition and has only seen the very lightest use. Under close inspection I can only make out a couple of very slightest marks per side - nothing remotely troublesome. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a mostly EXCELLLENT+ level of playback with one slight deviation. Plays clean as a whistle which is good news considering the vintage. And just to reiterate - this is STEREO 1st from 1961 and it plays mostly Ex+... that is not something you can say too often! Even the quiet sections play impressively clean, but it is equally adept at the crazy hardcore moments. Massive power and authority from this movie score. I've been pitting it against some of the mono's in this period - and it is SCARY good! The transient sounds are reproduced with impressive accuracy. Hardly any background at all. I have never witnessed a better copy. The only issues I could detect is a solitary 1 second pulse of interference during side 2 [in isolation]. And a couple of crackles in the lowkey choral early on side 1.  To be honest it is 99% amazing...
Cover (Ex+) Absolutely stunning - given the vintage quite literally amazing. The front is flat shiny and uncreased. The rear is perfectly white. This is no trick of the camera. That rear looks white - and is totally white. Perfect preservation - almost otherworldly. Flipbacks are all intact and secure. Minimal edge wear. Spine is 100% intact. Overall the cover retains excellent rigidity. FINAL UPGRADE.
Inner (Vg) Aged.
