Description
Description: Here is a very nice American Berliner record from Nov 27 of 1896 [#311z] with F. Jardella on Clarinet (or "Clarionet" as the record says). The description of the music on the record is just "Introduction." According to the Berliner reference book by Paul Charosh, the actual music is "Act III, Prelude to Alvaro's recitative and aria, from the Verdi Opera "La Forza del Destino."
Condition: Very nice to excellent condition. The flaws are negligible. The small vertical streak on the right is very light surface marring. A couple of very minor needle digs. Whitish marks showing around 9-10pm are completely superficial. There are a smattering of typical Berliner pressing depressions, but all of them are shallow and inconsequential. Very few scratches.
Most importantly of all, the record plays beautifully. I played it with a light, electrical 78 pick-up. It tracks well and there are absolutely no disruptions. I would never have guessed that a clarinet could sound so natural with the earliest recording technology. Plus extremely little surface noise for a Berliner. There does seem to be some pitch (recording speed) variation. An experienced recording engineer could extract an amazing sound transfer file from this record. Berliners don't get much cleaner or better sounding.
