Here we have a RARE Berliner 7” disc by Italian tenor (and guitarist) Arthur Biancalana Adamini.
It was recorded in the USA, probably in New York, in approximately 1898.
Arthur (or Arturo) B Adamini was the first singer to record The National Anthem Of Peru in 1897 “Himno Nacional Peruano”... so that's an interesting fact to drop into conversation next time you're down the pub.
He recorded for Berliner and Edison in a variety of styles. Being a vaudevillian artiste he could perform operatic items (“La Donna e Mobile”), patriotic and Spanish-styled songs, like “Ay Chiquita” which has nothing to do with Abba, and even comedy songs like “I’m Going Back To The Land Of Spaghetti” which he recorded in 1910.
This disc contains the Spanish-style song “El Curucucu” which is about a bird with a characteristic call. It is described as “Cantada Habanera”.
Adamini was not a great operatic tenor, but he had the piercing loud “head” voice that was required for successful acoustic recording, one hundred and twenty-six years ago.
He is accompanied by the regulation warbling piano and the record is great fun.. although you’ll have to play it back at slightly less than 78rpm to get the correct timbre.
Conditionwise, we reckon that it’s a strong V+ or better with no needle digs or troublesome scratches and only a very few of the usual tiny “blisters” which do not matter a hill o’ beans. The wax is “signed” by the singer and bears the usual printed patent numbers, plus the catalogue number 1932.
A video is attached (introduced as usual by Mr Fuffy) which shows the slightly noisy start and the good clear sound. No noise reduction has been applied.
