Description
Perfect sealed original copy on Mandala Records out of St. Paul, Minnesota. From Ken Scott's "Archivist":
Sophisticated collection of original songs presented in an electric '60's folk-rock style. I'd wager that the talented Backman was equally influenced by the satirical folk style of Tom Paxton and Phil Ochs, as well the '60s Catholic folk movement. Also has some of the vibe of John Fisher's The Cold Cathedral. Nice psychy tripprd presence to moody minor-key tracks like 'Jerusalem Road' (from Luke 9:57-62), 'Solemn 22 Or 23', 'High-Flyin' Bird' and 'East And West', all with soft hypnotic electric guitar accompaniment. Backman's satirical wit works its way into cuts like 'What Did You Learn In Church?' ("a snapshot of non-Christian mis-education"), 'You Can't Legislate Morals' (with delicious falsetto vocals from the "lilywhite mama"), 'The Pills' and the guitar backed poem 'Reverse Creation'. Closes with cover of Wayfarin' Pilgrim'. Features Backman on 12-string guitar, with assistance on percussion, bass and lead guitar. Totally creepy photo of the guy on the back -- looks like he could be Anton LaVey's assistant pastor or something (although I Must say that peace-sign necklace is pretty hip). Recorded at United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities, Minnesota.
Please check out my other auctions! I have hundreds of hard to find psych, prog, blues, folk, ssw, xian, and private press LPs up this week!
All records are original U.S. pressings unless otherwise noted and have been professionally cleaned on a VPI 16.5
Grading:
NM Looks unplayed or perhaps played just a few times. The cleanest grade I give and very rarely used.
VG++ (same as EX) Very light surface marks often from the inner sleeve that do not affect play. Perhaps a very light tick or brief moment of barely audible surface noise at the very worst. Overall a very clean record.
VG+ Light surface noise during a quiet moment or two. Might play with a few light pops here and there but nothing sustained over more than a few seconds.
VG Surface noise is more pronounced or more frequent than in a VG+ record, but never skips or overtakes the music. Might play with some light pops or ticks for a minute or two at a time. Still an enjoyable listen.
VG- A filler copy. Will play with louder pops or ticks than a VG record and surface noise might compete with the music during the quieter moments. I will only offer a record in this condition when its scarcity demands.
