ABOUT THE RECORD The Fantasy Film World of Bernard Herrmann is a recording of musical scores from four movies: Journey to the Centre of the Earth, The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, The Day the Earth Stood Still and Fahrenheit 451. Herrmann conducts the National Philharmonic Orchestra on this recording. He was an American composer known for his work in motion pictures. The Day the Earth Stood Still soundtrack was composed in July, and recorded in August 1951. It was Bernard Herrmann's first soundtrack after he moved from New York to Hollywood. 20th Century Fox later reused the Herrmann title theme in the original pilot episode for Irwin Allen's 1965 TV series Lost in Space. Danny Elfman noted The Day the Earth Stood Still?'?s score inspired his interest in film composing, and made him a fan of Herrmann. When Herrmann asked Truffaut, director of Fahrenheit 451, why he was chosen over "modern" composers, such as the director's friends Pierre Boulez or Karlheinz Stockhausen, the director replied that "They'll give me music of the twentieth century but you'll give me music of the twenty first!" Herrmann used a score of only string instruments, harp, xylophone, vibraphone, marimba and glockenspiel."
