ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This handsome and rare LP from Deutsche Gramophon (419 604-1, West German pressing, DDD stereo) features Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra's powerful and deeply felt account of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 in B minor Op. 74 'Pathetique', taped 'live' at Avery Fischer Hall, New York in August 1986 (producer: Hanno Rinke / engineers: Hans Weber and Klaus Scheibe).

Fine as his earlier CBS reading was (also with the NYPO), this  DG remake benefits from the added frisson of 'live' performance, imbued throughout with a tremendous sense of occasion.

This stirring Tchaikovsky LP – along with the conductor's DG Mahler albums – must be counted among Bernstein's last recordings to be issued in the long-play format. The sound is of demonstration quality, the artwork striking, the whole a superb memento of Bernstein.

Incidentally, the striking cover art is by photographer Holger Matthies, Hamburg. There are superb liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket in English and Italian (by David Brown), as well as in French (by André Lischke) and German (by Hartmut Fladt).

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is bumping at corners, particularly to the lower-right corner, as well as slight edgewear, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, and glossy – overall, a very good collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT and the playback is superb – overall, an outstanding collector's copy.
