Vintage Tape Delay
This auction is for a rare vintage tape delay, built like a tank, in Brussels, by the local Bettendorff workshops, around the mid-sixties. The preamps and line amps are high quality tube designs, and the tape transport is built around a superb Suiss mechanism and motor. The machine has a separately switchable mic preamp which probably is already worth it by itself, for its warm velvety tonal quality. Preamp and delay return ('Echo') level are separately controllable, as is the output of the (separate) headphone out ('G' = left, 2=both, 'D'=right). The delay time is constantly variable from 0.1 to 2 secs with an ingeniously designed worm wheel that moves the replay head closer to or further away from the record head.
The machine is now wired for 240V operation but easily changeable for 110V by any quailfied technician. It uses standard 1/4" audio tape (for longer tape life one can consider using lubricated cartridge tape as found in sonifex jingle cartridge machines). The motor and electronics (amps) can be switched on and off independantly so one can leave the machine 'warm' while saving the motor. Inputs and outputs are on standard 1/4" jacks and din sockets.
This machine originates from a former TV studio but was probably soon joined by plate and spring reverbs and somewhat forgoten. It survived a fair amount of time and is in great condition ! (The only part that might need servicing in due course is probably the pinch roller pressing the tape against the capstan, the rubber of which seems a little dry and stiff - seen the diameter and size of rubber this should not cause any problems)
