The title certainly gets it right – as Betty Harris is a hell of a soul singer, but has always been "lost" when it comes to the radio charts and history books! Don't let that hold you back, though – because Harris is one of those artists who bring a smile to your face from the very first time you hear her sing – then have you going back to her work again and again over the years! Betty's a lot funkier than some of her female contemporaries on the southern soul scene – thanks in part to work on these cuts by producer Allen Toussaint, and sometime backing by The Meters – two forces that make these late 60s recordings a huge precursor to better-known female funk – including work from Aretha Franklin on up through Sharon Jones. Harris was one of the first to tread that territory, and still is one of the best – and the folks at Soul Jazz have given us one of the best collections we've ever seen of her music. Most tracks are from rare Sansu label singles – and titles include "Mean Man", "Ride Your Pony", "Show It", "Bad Luck", "Trouble With My Lover", "Nearer To You", "All I Want Is You", "There's A Break In The Road", "12 Red Roses", "What A Said Feeling", "What'd I Do Wrong", and "I Don't Wanna Hear It".
