Description
Artist - Beverley (Beverley Martyn with Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, John Renbourn, etc.
Title - Picking Up The Sunshine c/w Gin House Blues
Format - UK 2 sided Emidisc Acetate
Label - Emidisc (Was to be released on Deram)
Year of Issue - 1966 Unreleased.
Condition - The acetate has quite a lot of surface marking on both sides but plays very well. No sticks or jumps and no heavy pops or clicks. There is a little surface noise and a few light pops on side 2 bot nothing serious. This acetate comes from the collection of a DJ who was given singles, Lps, acetates and test pressings for promotional use throughout the 60s and 70s. Most of the singles were filed and never played.
Description - Well here is a lost gem, a fabulous piece of mid 60s Brittish rhythm and blues. These two tracks were recorded for Deram and were to be released as the second single on the label (DM 101) in 1966. Just before the release the tracks were replaced with with "Happy New Year" and "Where The Good Times Are". The session players included Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, John Renbourn, Mike Lease and I think Nicky Hopkins was involved. The A side "Picking Up The Sunshine" is a great track with Piano and Hammond Organ to the fore and Beverley showing that she could rival J0-Ann Kelly when it came to singing the Blues. Side 2 is another great track with Jimmy Page playing some great electric blues and again superb vocals from the 17 year old Beverley. I have icluded an extract from an interview with Mike Lease about the recording of these tracks.
VV: Did you do many pop sessions in those early years?
ML: Quite a few. I couldn't really afford to turn work down. Don't think I was ever on a big hit, but there was plenty that should have been, but were never released. One in particular with Beverley Martin, called 'Picking Up The Sunshine', which would have been number one for sure had it ever come out. It should have been the second ever Deram single, but they released her doing a Randy Newman song instead. It had Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, Nicky Thompson, John Renbone and myself on it, and it was a monster of a track. I could probably think of a few minor hits, but it's all a bit murky!
