Big Brother & The Holding Company ?– Cheap Thrills

CBS/Sony ?– SONP 50030
500300 A2 1AG / 500300 B3 1AG

Released Japan 1968

One of the classic albums of the 1960s, Cheap Thrills was released in 1968 by Big Brother and the Holding Company fronted by Janis Joplin. Classic tracks include cover songs of "Summertime", "Piece of My Heart" and "Ball and Chain."
Cover artwork was by the legendary artist Robert Crumb, who originally intended his artwork for the back cover, with a portrait of Joplin on the front. But Joplin, an avid fan of underground comics, especially the work of Crumb so loved his Thrills illustration that she demanded Columbia place it on the front cover.
Triva: It is number nine on Rolling Stone’s list of 100 greatest album covers.

Lovely copy of this Japanese 1968 press of this Classic Big Brother & The Holding Company album: thick (solid) board sleeve EX-, four page lyric sheet, original CBS/ Sony logoed anti-static sleeve, vinyl retains its gloss graded EX+, clean audio EX/EX+

Part of my own collection.

Sleeve: thick board sleeve, best described a solid, no rips  or writing, all images and text remain sharp and fully readable, all edges straight and true, fully readable and proud spine although this has cracked with age (see photo), light/normal corner rub and creasing only solid VG+/ EX-

Four page Inner lyric sheet, excellent condition, no OBI

Labels: CBS Sony smooth White/Orange labels. Clean of any unwanted writing or sticker residue, some spider trails, extremely light signs of play only EX-

Vinyl: Full gloss, visually both sides retain their original glossy sheen and good grove distinction, clean; closer inspection (under bright light and a magnifying glass) shows a couple of small wispy feint lines only - graded EX towards EX+

Comes in original CBS/ Sony logoed anti-static sleeve

Audio: Plays through clean, good audio separation, no pips, pops, skips or jumps, faint static on opening dead wax only, lovely copy graded EX+ (played on a Project carbon - blue Ortofon).

Please note:  audio quality can differ from one pressing to another and unless you have two copies to compare it is sometimes difficult to know. Audio quality can also vary from one system to another and while I try to describe my audio experience it might not be the same as somebody elses.

I have tried to be honest and transparent in my description, the photographs form part of the description. Questions are welcome, don't hesitate to ask. I have good feedback (and positive comments) as both a buyer and seller, so you can buy with confidence. I am a collector of 47+ years, buying and selling a few records to feed my changing tastes. The few records I sell are either the results of upgrades, duplicates or a bit of thinning every now and again. If anything is not as expected, please contact me straight away and I will do everything to resolve any problems without argument.

I strictly adhere to the Record Collector Magazine's Grading Guide using one + or - for addition guidance:

MINT: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition.

EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and / or creasing.

VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.
