Bill Withers – Bill Withers Live At Carnegie Hall

Released in April 1973, Live At Carnegie Hall is the sole live album by the R&B and soul singer-songwriter. It captures a gig Withers performed at New York City’s storied concert venue on October 6, 1972. It was a rainy night in the “Big Apple”, which you can hear Withers acknowledge after initially ending his first song, Use Me, declaring, “appreciate you’re all coming out in this rain.” Withers comments throughout the album, which along with audience noise help make you feel you’re actually there, giving it a very authentic vibe. At the same time, the music never gets overpowered, creating a neat balance!
Includes - I Can’t Write Left-Handed, an anti-war song Withers wrote with Ray Jackson, the pianist of his backing band who is also credited for string and horn arrangements and as a co-producer. The song, which it appears Withers had not recorded before, tells the moving tale of a young soldier who lost his right arm in war, asking somebody else whether they could write a letter to his mother to urge her to hire a lawyer to try getting a deferment for his younger brother. Based on Withers’ announcement of the song, apparently, it was inspired by an actual encounter he had with a crippled young soldier. Withers who had served in the U.S. Navy could relate!
