“Folk-Rock in a Stone Groove”… indeed. Here’s a bizarre outsider psych LP by Dane Sturgeon. The album is entitled “Wild ‘n’ Tender” on the Stur-Geon records label, number TS-100. This is the edition of the album with the photo of Dane on the cover. The jacket is still in the shrinkwrap. The vinyl grades VG+ with a small “lift” at the edge of the vinyl that doesn’t affect play. There’s a label taped to the shrinkwrap that has the name and address where this LP was originally purchased… kinda neat! I’ve owned (and enjoyed) a copy of this LP for years, and it is really hard to describe it- part psychedelic, part cowboy music, part Roy Orbison, part Spector’s wall of sound… it’s all in there. Heck, the album was even recorded Gold Star studios, the same place where Phil Spector created all of those great records. And to top it off, the songwriting is just plain weird. “Ghost of Bardsley Road” is about a ghost on a motorcycle that races kids and kills them, with plenty of maniacal laughter. “Queen Bee” and “Hurricane” are a about a lover who ruins lives. “Whip of Love”… well, that needs no further explanation. The LP was interesting enough to gain mention in the acid archives.
