Master Of Reality was afforded one of the most self-destructing cover designs in the history of rock music (possibly with the exception of Alice Cooper's Muscle Of Love). The result is that there are seemingly no mint original copies of this fabulous record available. Indeed, within a few weeks of ownership the box-set shape of the envelope sleeve would be squashed flat, the corners scuffed and the laminated clarifoil finish would emphasise every little crease and blemish.
Having said that, 41 years later, the sleeve of this record is in pretty good shape. It's not torn, there's the odd crease - very clean, nowt to be ashamed of. Certainly not for an album that was apparently designed to fall apart in your collection.
And so, to the vinyl. I'd class this one as VG-; using the established Record Collector grading system: -
VERY GOOD:
The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality,
despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch.
Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.
Most importantly - it sounds great. Sure, there's some - not too much - surface noise but unlike lots of records of this vintage and genre, it does not appear to have been played with a blunt or chipped needle. As the stylus approaches the centre of the disc, there's none of that fuzziness that is associated with well-loved (read: well-hated) vinyl. Worst offence? Two noticeable clicks at the start of side 2. Apart from that, it's all good.
Here's a piece of vinyl history. This is the way it was, in sixth form common rooms and university bedsits throughout the nation in the early 1970s. Dim the lights, lower the tone arm, light up a joss stick - and fall in to the abyss that is the spiral label. And for the next 40 minutes or so, stone out and dig the heaviest of progressive rock.
Bid now. You know you want to.
