Lovely copy of Black Sabbath’s classic second album on the original Vertigo swirl label.

This is the rarer version with a fully laminated cover and a larger swirl design on the label and is in absolutely pristine condition, swirl label copies of this LP are pretty common but always in poor condition, this is a stonker, best copy I’ve seen for ages.

Condition: Sleeve

Virtually faultless, the usual good quality Vertigo construction but unusually for Vertigo a fully laminated sleeve which is in beautiful condition.

The front cover is in just beautiful condition. It’s extremely clean and has no flaws whatsoever. There’s no tears or writing anywhere, the lamination is clean and bright with a lovely reflective surface and no hint of lifting or bubbling, the only slight criticism would be a couple of tiny very light creases coming in from the spine and another couple from the open edge but this is being extremely picky, I would be very happy indeed if the sleeves of all of my records looked like this.

The rear sleeve is, if anything even better than the front, extremely clean with no hint of any wear or damage of any type except two very small lamination creases coming in from the spine and another couple of extremely light half moon shaped lamaination creases near the open edge but again this is being extremely critical, if I bought this somewhere graded as Mint I would have no complaints whatsoever.

Inside the gatefold is just pristine, absolutey perfect.

Both top and bottom seams are totally unworn.

The spine is unworn and all of the writing is clearly readable.

The open edge is clean and sharp with no hint of any feathering or wear.

All four corners are shape and well defined, all in all this is just a lovely condition sleeve.

Condition: Record

It would be hard for the record to match the extremely high standards set by the sleeve but incredibly it comes very very close to doing just that. The disc is extremely clean and looks just beautiful with that lovely dark sheen which only sparsley played records have. In normal light there are no surface marks at all to spoil it’s appearance. Closely examined under a very harsh lamp a couple of extremely light hairline marks are revealed but it can’t be emphasised how light these are and that they are totally inaudible.

Both labels are in perfect condition, very clean with no hint of any wear or damage..

When played the disc sits on the turntable perfectly flatly with no hint of any warping or uneveness and it sounds just great. The sound is very clean and clear with a wide dynamic range, from the driving fuzz of the classic title track to the few more delicate moments on the record everything just sounded fantastic. No unwanted surface noise at all was noticed during the playback, no distortion, no groovewear, no pops, clicks or crackles, no jumping or sticking. This really is as good as it gets when collecting 40 year old records.

This isn’t one of the rarer Veritgo titles but all Vertigo albums are now rare in this type of condition, in fact any 40 year old rock album in this type of condition is to be grabbed with both hands and cherished because they just do not exist anymore, this copy is the exception to that rule and would be a beautiful addition to any classic rock or prog collection.
