For those not knowing the story: The first four Sabbath LPs were released by vertigo on their famous swirl label. In the early 70’s the publishing rights were bought by the Nems label who produced all the later represses. Just before this buy out, vertigo had changed their label design to the ‘spaceship’ design seen on this copy. There spaceship copies are very rare as vertigo lost the publishing rights almost strait after introducing this new label and so only had time to produce a few. There is some debate over exactly how few are in existence with some claiming as few as 200 and general agreement that the number does not exceed 3 figures. While not as famous as the swirl label, the spaceship copies of this album are in fact much more scarce and hard to find

Comes in a laminate gatefold which is the rarest version and much nicer that the unlaminated matt cover which is super prone to wear.

Condition (1-5) Vinyl / Cover = 5.00/4.25

Notes: vinyl is visually in stunning shape. Even when viewed tilted in strong light it is pretty close to unmarked with just a couple of small ultra light marks which you have too look very very closely to spot – (this is being very picky – its about as good as it gets for used vinyl of any age and stunning for record approaching 40 years old) Has the fantastic deep shiny gloss of very lightly played vinyl. Audio - there is no deterioration to the sound quality when played tested at a decent volume. I have listened to many original vertigo copies and while the quality of the sound itself is often superb, the downside is that, for some reason in my experience, they nearly always play with quite a lot of static crackle, clicking, popping and skipping– even copies that visually look absolutely perfect / mint – (be very careful when paying out mega money for ‘mint’ copies that have only been visually graded – the only way to know how it will sound is to play test it!). This copy is the best I have heard. Sounds superb with no skips, repeats, clicks or pops whatsoever and minimal surface noise / static. Even the gaps between tracks and breaks in the music are often close to silence and sometimes totally silent. The super quiet ‘planet caravan’ in particular plays way better than I have heard on any other copy.  It has a lovely deep, rich, warm sound that only comes from these original thick slabs of vinyl. Played back to back with a later Nems repress the difference is astonishing. So if you have never listened to an original vertigo copy then it’s highly recommended! To sum up, this is great vinyl and you will find it hard to get a better copy. Cover - Rare laminate cover has a little light general wear – mostly just the odd usual small laminate crease around the edges and a little very light mottling on the inner gatefold which isn’t really noticeable. A very nice crisp, square example with no major wear or damage – no rips, no splits, no writing, no ringwear and a fully readable. Inner cover – spaceship versions did not come with the swirl pattern inner. The plain inner on this copy was split so I have replaced with a new one. Labels. Again superb – spotless, pristine examples.

Great copy on the very scarce vertigo spaceship label with the rarest laminated gatefold cover. Superb vinyl – you will find it very difficult to better this vinyl for condition unless you can find a sealed / unplayed copy (good luck!).

Grading:

 I will be grading critically to avoid disappointment. (scale at bottom of page) In my experience there is no such thing as a used record that has no marking at all, if you choose to look closely enough!  Hence nothing will be described as mint.

Other stuff:

* Record has been play tested for at least a couple of tracks. I’ve been in contact with e-bayers who have already bought. They are very pleased with condition compared to what they expected from the grading and report excellent sound quality even from records listed as having heavier damage.

*Buy with confidence. I’m happy to offer a no argument refund should unexpected problems arise on playing or I’ve missed something in the description / grading (refund less postage on return of item within 7 days).

Grading Scale:

Vinyl

5 = Absolute minimal amount of ultra light, totally superficial surface hairlines / marks that are only visible when tilted under strong light. Expect no impact on audio. 4 =   Light surface marks / scratches. Some more visible but all still superficial. May include 1 small slightly heavier mark affecting a single track only. Still expect no or minimal impact on audio. 3 = Some heavier marks / scratches. Expect them to be audible and slightly detract from the overall listening experience. 2 = Heavy scratches / marks. Expect to hear pronounced and distracting clicks or cracks on at least couple of tracks. 1 = Several heavy scratched / marks / other damage. Expect several tracks to be affected and a couple to the extent that they may be considered unlistenable. However should still play through.

Covers

5 = Hardly any wear of any description. Maybe slightest of wear to very tip of a corner or a couple of ultra  light tiny edge creases which you would have to look very closely to see. 4 = Some general light wear and maybe a small area of moderate wear. Includes seam wear (spine still readable), light creasing restricted to edges, slight discolouration (but not damage) from a removed stickers, maybe 1 slightly crumpled corner. 3 = Moderate general wear plus 1 piece of damage such as a rip, seam split, heavily folded corner, major scuff on  front / back, patch of surface removed by sticker or very noticeable ringwear. 2 = Heavy general wear plus one or two pieces of damage. 1 = Several major issues – very tatty.

Inner covers

5 = Hardly any wear of any description. Maybe a couple of small spots of very light discolouration or a super light and small crease. 4 = Discolouration, general light wear, light creasing. 3 = Moderate general wear plus 1 piece of damage such a seam split or heavily folded corner. 2 = Heavy general wear plus one or two pieces of damage. 1 = Several major issues – very tatty. Not graded = bog standard blank inner sleeve.
