The Blondie: Against The Odds 1974-1982 Super Deluxe Vinyl Box Set is a comprehensive archival collection celebrating the first eight years of Blondie’s career, released on August 26, 2022, by Capitol/UMC/Numero Group.
It’s the first authorized in-depth archive of the band, covering their influential period from punk roots to global pop stardom, with over 40 million records sold.
Contents:
• 10 LPs: Includes Blondie’s six studio albums (Blondie, Plastic Letters, Parallel Lines, Eat To The Beat, Autoamerican, The Hunter), remastered from original analog tapes and cut at Abbey Road Studios on 180g vinyl. Four additional LPs feature 52 bonus tracks, including session outtakes, B-sides, and demos, titled Plaza Sound, Parallel Beats, Coca Cola, and Home Tapes. 36 of the 124 total tracks are previously unreleased.
• 10-inch LP: Out In The Streets, with 1974 session tracks, a 1975 Alan Betrock demo, and a 1974 rehearsal tape.
• 7-inch Single: Features Blondie’s cover of The Doors’ “Moonlight Drive” and a demo of “Mr. Sightseer”.
• Books:
• A 144-page hardcover book with liner notes by Erin Osmon, session commentary from band members (Debbie Harry, Chris Stein, Clem Burke, Jimmy Destri, Frank Infante, Nigel Harrison, Gary Valentine), and essays by producers Richard Gottehrer and Mike Chapman.
• A 120-page discography book showcasing period-specific picture sleeves, 45 labels, international sleeve variants, flexi-discs, cassettes, and 8-tracks.
• Packaging: Foil-wrapped, housed in a slipcase. Available in black vinyl, red vinyl (identical content), or a limited platinum blonde vinyl (500 copies).
Notable Tracks:
• Studio albums include hits like “Heart of Glass,” “Call Me,” “Rapture,” and “The Tide Is High.”
• Bonus tracks feature early basement sessions, bedroom demos, Giorgio Moroder collaborations, covers (e.g., Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire”), and alternate versions like “Sunday Girl (French Version)” and “Spaghetti Song (Atomic Pt. 2).”
Significance:
• Chronicles Blondie’s evolution from New York’s punk scene to pioneering pop, punk, and hip-hop crossover, with a “sound, attitude, look, and aesthetic” that inspired generations.
• Six years in production, sourced from a chaotic archive in a Woodstock barn, including reel-to-reel tapes and ephemera preserved despite rodents and a bullet hole in a gold record.
• Praised by The New York Times as “the definitive account” of Blondie’s greatness and by PopMatters (10/10) for capturing their punk-to-pop superstardom.
