As far as I’m concerned, records are meant to be played (maybe just once, to tape it), and enjoyed for their musical contents. Looking at the visual appearance of a record may give you hints as to what to expect when you actually play it, and therefore I always play grade any record I list (except factory sealed items). This means I listen to the first minute or so of each side of the record, and to any visually suspect places, if applicable. This explains that in more than a few instances, you will find a visual grading next to an acoustical grading.

There are 2 ways in which a record can be acoustically worse than Mint: either there is surface noise (hiss, crackles, clicks), or the musical contents itself is damaged, eg. by a worn stylus; in that case, high notes may “screech”, or “sweeping” sounds may be present. I never list records with the latter kind of damage, as they are not enjoyable by any means. Now for the abbreviations I use:

Mint: I don’t use this qualification, though some records I sell probably are; I just do not want to get involved in unfruitful discussions about this pressing-induced light click about halfway side 2 which you can hear on your turntable combination, but of which I have no knowledge, as I probably have not played the record that far, and my turntable may either be more forgiving or more perfect in following the grooves.

M-: As good as new, maybe 1 or 2 barely visible lines or scuffs, which will certainly do nothing to the sound.

VG++: There may be some slightly visible lines or scuffs, but their impact on the music should be next to nothing. No ticks, clicks and crackles, but isolated light sounds are possible; just audible, not intrusive, let alone disturbing.

VG+: A bit more of the above, and I also use this grading for a record, that has some isolated visible damage with temporary audible consequences, but is otherwise perfect; this will always be specified.

VG: Light marks like hairlines and scuffs are visible, nothing deep, no scratches, there will be audible background noises, mostly specified in the item description, but this record still can be played loud, and enjoyed that way.

Anything below VG has to be very rare and desirable to be listed at all. But even these extensively used records have to be listenable to be listed; as said above, records are meant to be listened to, and if that is no longer possible, they are worthless, and should be disposed of in other ways than selling them.
