text from inside cover: "The Original recording were (almost)all in stereo, the standard set up, which was largely adhered to throughout being right channel: Dylan Vocal. Acoustic guitar piano harmony vocal: left channel: bass,organ,drums) electric guitar,2nd harmony vocal: Sadly, to date , all officially released basement tape material has been presented in collapsed mono, and the wonderful depth and much of the inimacy in the original recordings has been lost. Garth Hudson, however, arrange for engineer John Simon to make, under Studio conditions, a stereo "Safety Tape" of 19 of the basement Songs onto 15ips 10" reels, 15 of these tracks were mastered directly from the Original stereo tapes(tracks 1-15) though curiously 4 were taken from Inferior sources. The 2 Tracks 16 and 17 which found place on this record were not taken not from this source, they have been replaced with tracks from the Fraboni Reels that Robertson and Fraboni compiled when preparing the official Basement Tape release.
Quite what the purpose or intention of this Safety Tape was is unclear. Certaily it was not referenced for use for any of the official Basement Tapes Releases suggesting that its existence had not been officially documented. All that is known of the tape`s subsequent history is that it ended up in, and was ultimately liberated from, the personal tape archive of Neil Young."
