Mobile Fidelity's current "Ultra Gain II" system (two Nelson Pass amplifiers) rivals earlier MoFi records in transparency. I also think these records have an astounding amount of headroom for an all transistor chain. While most companies are just starting to figure out how to master digital to vinyl, the guys at MoFi are past that and have, for over the last ten years, been pushing the envelope of something simply better, the sound of a first generation master tape. Many recent reissues are straight digital to vinyl which I think is way better than the ones that are cut from a safety tape. These MoFi records are made from the best available TAPES. That's right I said tape, do yourself a favor and rediscover how great tape sounds. All recent MoFi records are made using some of the best tape decks available anywhere, tweaked out to perfection and engineered to be beautiful and sublime. The remastering on some of these is refreshingly conservative and that just affirms a truism: less is more; something that made MoFi great to begin with. There are many domestic and European boutique plants that press some great records; shoot there's more vinyl now in the mid-west than you can shake a stick at. It's hard to argue whose best, but ask who's more experienced. Well that's where this circle gets very small. RTI is America's best record plant. RTI is also the most "family oriented" record pressing facility. RTI takes the “small” out of Small Business. It's only natural these test pressings serve as proof of how American records are still a benchmark to define “high fidelity”. The relationship between MoFi and RTI has always been about making a better record sound even better. These test pressings are plated in-house at RTI and are made from lacquers cut at MoFi. Turn around time causes the test pressing runs to be very small; generally less than 50 test pressings are made of any one title, some runs are as few as 10. And forget any QA issues; they come off the press and are cooled by hand before they are sleeved. These records are made with great care, by hand and exemplify a labor of love at every step. And I believe these MoFi test pressings are hands down the best records RTI has pressed in the last 15 years.
