Description
ZIMMERMAN: TEN OF SWORDS ~ BOB DYLAN
The legendary "Ten of Swords" boxed set.
Ten LP's
One hundred thirty eight Bob Dylan alternative recordings spanning the years 1961-1966.
I bought this boxed set as a new item shortly after it came out in 1985. When I bought the set I played the records once to tape record them and then put them away. They have been stored ever since in nice plastic lined sleeves. You might see this boxed set at auction now and then but I doubt you will see one with the vinyl in this condition. All ten records are in essentially new condition.
From the cover: "The only definitive collection! 10 record set over 8 hours of music. 134 previously Unreleased tracks"
When this boxed set came out it set a new standard for alternative releases and whoever created it clearly did it as a labor of love. The records are pressed on the Tarantula label (Tarantula CL 16319). The material focuses on vintage Dylan recordings taken from the years 1961- 1966. It incorporated music from all the circulating Dylan studio outtakes, the Whitmark and Leeds Music demos, the Minneapolis Hotel tape, the Gaslight tapes, the Albert Hall '66 concert - etc.. All of the recordings were taken from the best quality master tapes known to exist at the time. The records were pressed on high quality vinyl. The labels were professionally printed. The box was made of sturdy pressed cardboard. And the set came complete with a nice sixteen page booklet.
This is what Rolling Stone had to say about this release when it came out.
Rolling Stone Magazing (471, April 10, 1986)
Following the success of Biograph, an illegal boxed set of Bob Dylan recordings has begun to turn up in record stores around the country, creating quite a stir among Dylan fans. The ten-record set, called Ten of Swords after a card in the tarot deck, contains material Dylan recorded between 1961 and 1966. Selling for as much as eighty dollars, Ten of Swords is a ascinating--and for collectors, indispensable--companion to the seven official Dylan albums released during that same time period.
The collection's 134 tracks (118 different songs, more than eight hours of material) include numerous gems. A few highlights: the entire 1966 Royal Albert Hall concert [now known to be 17 May 1966 Manchester], one of Dylan's greatest performances; revealing outtakes from the seminal Bring It All Back Home and Highway 61 sessions; and a nearly eight-minute poem, "Last Thoughts on Woody Guthrie," from a concert at Carnegie Hall.
Equally important, the pressings are of good quality, with, for the most part, little surface noise. The recordings have been professionally packaged in chronological order, and the box includes a well-written sixteen-page booklet providing detailed notes on the material.
=================================
As stated above all ten of the records being auctioned here are shiny and in barely played condition. The sixteen page booklet is also in almost new condition. The box shows some minor wear on the outside and a few small stains (see pictures). Otherwise the box is intact and in VG(+) condition. I have tried to post a complete set of pictures. If anyone would like to see photos showing other aspects please let me know.
