Bob and Roberta Smith (b. 1963, London, UK), whose real name is Patrick Brill, trained as a sign painter in New York and uses text as an art form, creating colourful slogans on banners and placards that challenge elitism and advocate the importance of creativity in politics and education. Talking about his practice, he says he sees ‘art as an important element in democratic life.’ His recent work Thamesmead Codex, which celebrates the voices and local community of Thamesmead, London, is on display at Tate Modern, 27 January – 7 May 2023. He lives and works in London and Ramsgate, UK.
