*** All-time classic Boogie Woogie ***
Here's a 1936 pressed English Odeon 78 of two superb Piano Blues/Boogie Woogie recordings.
Honkey Tonk Train Blues is a true Boogie Woogie Masterpiece. The 1927 rendition of "Honky Tonk Train Blues" on the Paramount Records label marked his recording debut. He remade it for Parlophone in 1935 (the version heard on this Odeon issue) and for Victor in 1937. His performance at John Hammond's historic From Spirituals to Swing concert at Carnegie Hall in 1938 brought Lewis to public attention. Following the event, Lewis and two other performers from that concert, Albert Ammons and Pete Johnson, often appeared as a trio and became the leading boogie-woogie pianists of the day.
The flip-side is called Barrelhouse by pianist Jess Stacy and has Gene Krupa on drums and Israel Crosby on bass.
