Booker Ervin ORIG US 2LP Freedom and space sessions NM 79 Prestige Jazz Hard Bop
Booker Ervin
The freedom and space sessionsOriginal US 2LP released in 1979 on Prestige Records. Cat: P24091. This album has a gatefold sleeve.
Tenor-saxophonist Booker Ervin was overshadowed during his lifetime by everyone from Eric Dolphy and John Coltrane to Ornette Coleman and Sonny Rollins. Ervin, whose distinctive sound can be identified within two notes, never received much recognition but he was one of the top tenors of the 1960s as can be heard on this excellent two-LP set. The two-fer includes the full contents of both The Freedom Book and The Space Book plus two other selections originally issued on another LP. Joined by the remarkably versatile pianist Jaki Byard, bassist Richard Davis and drummer Alan Dawson, Ervin is top form on seven of his obscure originals plus three standards and Randy Weston's "Cry Me Not."
Tracks: A lunar tune/ Cry me not/ A day to mourn/ Grant’s stand/ Stella by starlight/ Al’s in/ Mojo/ I can’t get started/ Number two/ The second #2/ There is no greater love.
