Description

Johannes Brahms: Symphony No.1 in C Minor, Op.68, played by the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Otto Klemperer.
Brahms spent at least fourteen years completing this work, whose sketches date from 1854. Brahms himself declared that the symphony, from sketches to finishing touches, took 21 years, from 1855 to 1876. The premiere of this symphony, conducted by the composer's friend Felix Otto Dessoff, took place on 4 November 1876, in Karlsruhe, then in the Grand Duchy of Baden. A typical performance lasts between 45 and 50 minutes. This particular version was released in October 1958 by Columbia Records, Serial No. SAX 2622. Unlike the more commonly found Mono version, 33CX 1504, this is a stereo recording. The record has been recently played to ensure that it remains in very good condition, as is also the album cover.
