Volume 2 of the Stereo Record Guide gave the recording a maximum three star recommendation. ”Of the six stereo versions now available the Klemperer and Walter readings stand together on their own plane, contrasted yet equally valid and distinguished interpretations…… Klemperer lets one hear so much more of the score than most other conductors, not only in clarity but in attention to the small points of detail. The recording though not of the most brilliant is atmospheric and spacious”.
The EMG Monthly Letter gave the recording a maximum two stars. ”A fine performance which, despite one or two minor reservations deserves the two stars carried by the mono version in our recommended list. This twin channel transfer has been well done and produces a warmer and more detailed sound than the mono; more range in the higher frequencies would have been welcome, and would have imparted bloom to the strings, which tend to sound steely in climaxes”.
Record Condition (Play graded throughout)
Prior to playing, the record was cleaned on my Moth Record Cleaning Machine. Playback equipment comprised a Thorens TD160, Linn Basik LVX Arm with Audio Technica AT-95E Cartridge.
The record was examined in bright sunlight. There are one or two very faint marks on both sides.
The sleeve is undamaged. There are approximately eight tiny foxing marks on the front cover of the sleeve. The reverse is slightly discoloured and not as white as it should be. (see photos)
Side 1
There is an occasional faint background noise in the second movement that is audible in quieter passages. There are no repetitive ticks and no deterioration in sound quality whatsoever.
Side 2
There are nine faint ticks in the third movement and one or two moments of background noise in the fourth. There is no deterioration in sound quality whatsoever,overall this is a wonderful recording.
