THE ALBUM STORY
This Lp was given to me by a friend about 1 1/2 years ago, along with some others in her collection, for helping her with an estate sale when she moved here to Venice,Fl. She grew up in Washington D.C. area and had access to radio stations, DJ's and the music scene during the seventies.That is how she obtained this rare, demo/promotional copy of this album. She kept them stored properly and hardly ever played them.They were kept in a smoke-free, controlled environment.
The Columbia record #JC 35318, dated 1978 is Bruce's 4th studio album and is in pristine condition. I have played it and it has no skips, scratches or any other issues at all. It includes the original lyric sheet and the album was produced by John Landau and Springsteen. It lists (the late) Clarence Clemons on saxophone along with all the other E Street band members at the time. The album shows only very minor wear on corners as most LP's of this age would have.
THE AUTOGRAPH STORY
My brother, Ed, lives in Homosasa, Florida, a small town north of Tampa. His neighbor and good friend is Tommy Kieshner. Tommy is the father of Soozie Tyrell(Kieschner)* Bruce's violinist who accompanies Bruce on tours. Last March, 23rd, during Bruce's "Wrecking Ball Tour"(2012) my brother, his wife and Soozie's parents were VIP guests at a concert at the Tampa Bay Times Forum venue in Tampa,Fl. My brother took this album with him at my request to get it autographed. After the show, all four were invited backstage for a meet and greet with the band. At that time, Soozie passed the album around (in my brother's presence) and all the band members, except Patti, signed the cover. That is why you see "To ED" above Bruce's signature, in the middle, and again on the left side. I understand that Bruce only signs autographs to the person who actually hands him something to sign. No cameras or recording equipment was allowed backstage during the aftershow party, therefore I have no photographic proof that all the band members signed it.
* a side note-Soozie Tyrell and Patti Sciafa(Bruce's wife) once played together along with Lisa Lowell in a band called "Trickster" in NY and NJ in Asburys Park's "the Stone Pony".
All the current band members signed the cover of this album. Bruce in the center. Clockwise from top right are ROY BITTAN(piano,keyboards), NILS LOFGREN (guitar,slide guitar), GARRY TALLENT (bass guitar), MAX WEINBERG (drums),Max added a little flourish of a drum and sticks, and lastly is STEVE VAN ZANDT (who added "was here") During Bruce's signing, he was heard to say "Damn, I haven't seen one of these in a long time".
I have investigated sending this album off to the PSA/DNA organization to get proof of authenticty, but they charge about $200/autograph for verification, which would be cost prohibitive. I was also worried it would get broken or lost in the process. I hate to part with such a rare piece of music memorabilia, however my wife needs eye surgery that our insurance does not cover.
