You are viewing one of the earliest albums of the trio which would eventually evolve to be one of the most influential Southern gospel groups of all time…THE Rambos. On this record you have a young Shirley Bivins-Cohron alongside Buck and Dottie Rambo. Shirley was responsible for most of the trio’s musical arrangements. She later left the Echoes and became a member of a quartet, The Apostolic Echoes before joining another The Gospel Keys (consisting of Will and Shirley alongside Tim and Dixie McKeithen.)

Will and Shirley’s son, Anthony, currently pastors a United Pentecostal church, the Rock Church in Jacksonville, Florida.

The Singing Rambos

Apostlic & Pentecostal roots

Dottie’s blind maternal grandfather Isaiah Burton and her mother Elizabeth were “tongue talking” Holy Ghost filled “Bapticostal” people and were the seminal influences in her early life.

Buck Rambo first laid eyes on Dottie in 1948 at a revival service in a small apostolic church in Rabbit Ridge, Kentucky pastored by his aunt Flossie Good. By the mid 1950’s Buck and Dottie married and were members of an apostolic church (Lighthouse Mission) in Madisonville Kentucky, pastored by James Russell who was known as “The Coal Miner Preacher.” Years earlier in 1946 Pastor Russell had preached his first revival services for Buck’s aunt Pastor Flossie Good. In 1959, Pastor Russell’s daughter Judy along with Buck and Dottie formed the Gospel Echoes which were the ORIGINAL iteration of what eventually became the The Singing Rambos in 1964.

Pastor Russell officially affiliated with the United Pentecostal Church (UPCI) in 1975

The first recording that the Gospel Echoes ever appeared was “Get On Board” which included another group, the “Christian Chapel Trio”. This album was made and marketed in a fundraising effort for the Assemblies of the Lord Jesus Christ (ALJC).

Their debut album was titled “Draw Me Near” (1961/62) sometime after this album was released Buck joined the UPCI after being asked by (then) Pastor Nathaniel Urshan. Their first date/first sales of the album was at the Louisiana District UPC Campmeeting.

The Rambos eventually left the United Pentecostal Church around late 1965/early 1966 following an uproar over their appearance as guests on a nationally syndicated music television, The Gospel Singing Jubilee.

Buck wrote in his 1992 book (The Legacy of Buck & Dottie Rambo) that sometime in late summer 1967 during a stop in Monroe, Louisiana, Bishop A.T Morgan (then general superintendent of the UPCI) openly repented to them for the way UPCI churches had mistreated them after the debacle which ensued post their TV appearance.
