This handsome and rare 3-LP slipcase set from Columbia Masterworks (M3L-239, US pressing, gray 6eye labels, mono – no stereo edition exists) features Mozart’s Six Quintets for String Quartet and Viola, here performed in magnificent fashion by the Budapest String Quartet and guest violist Walter Trampler. These remarkable perfomances were warmly recorded at Columbia 30th Stree Studio, New York, in November 1956* and January 1957.

At this time the Budapest Quartet was comprised of Joseph Roisman (1st violin), Alexander Schneider (2nd violin), Boris Kroyt (viola), and Mischa Schneider (cello).

The exact contents are as follows, all works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart:

String Quintet No. 1 in E-flat Major K. 174

String Quintet No. 2 in D minor K. 406

String Quartet No. 3 in C Major K. 515

String Quartet No. 4 in G minor K. 516

String Quartet No. 5 in D Major K. 593*

String Quartet No. 6 in E-flat Major K. 614

The memorable cover photo / design was executed by Seymour Mednick. There are no liner notes, either on the reverse side of the slipcase or on the hard interior jackets.

PLEASE NOTE:

Even with minimal packaging this set will weigh just over 1 kg. This means that outside of Europe the cost for shipping is about $40 USD, and that is just for standard airmail. Certified airmail (with a tracking number) costs $43 USD.

Those in doubt can visit the Spanish postal website (Correos.com), which is available in English. Although this listing states “free” shipping, it is not really free, of course. I have to pay for shipping like everyone else.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the box is near-MINT. There is minor wear and discoloration at corners, but really that is all. There are no owners' markings, bends, seamsplits, or other defects and the box remains solid, bright, glossy and highly attractive.  Overall, this is a fine collector's copy.

The condition of the 3 hard inner sleeves in NM – fine copies all.

The condition of the 3 LPs is near-MINT. Although the surfaces are not absolutely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) these are fine copies and playback is superb. If you must have flawless surfaces, then please do not buy this set – these rate as NM collector's copies.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
