This auction is for a STILL SEALED, NUMBERED (1 of 1 MH) 2-LP Experimental Regrind Vinyl Test Pressing marked A/B B, C/D B of the Classic Records 180gram reissue of "Buena Vista Social Club". Jacket is included as a bonus! Test pressings are highly collectible and are from the first stamper. Approximately less than 20 exist depending on the title. Test pressings reflect the closest you can get to the lacquers and hence have a special collectible value and store of value.
This test pressing set has special significance and collectability because it comes from Classic Records’ founder Michael Hobson’s personal archive and includes a certificate of authenticity signed by Michael Hobson as founder of Classic Records.
Throughout the Classic Records years, Michael Hobson was continuously experimenting with ways to make a better sounding record. One of the first things tried in the late 1990's was trying different vinyl formulations which ultimately lead to Quiex, Quiex SVP and later Clarity vinyl pressings of some of the great Classic reissues. According to Hobson "It was an evolutionary process of when we found something that improved the sound quality of our records we would institute the change." During a conversation about LP's Hobson and Doug Sax, founder of Sheffield Lab and Mastering legend at the Mastering Lab in Hollywood, Hobson mentioned that Classic had discovered that a 50/50 blend of virgin vinyl and regrind vinyl sounded better than 100% virgin. Sax's response was "100% regrind sounds even better" - and encouraged Hobson to try it which he did using the Ry Cooder Buena Vista Social Club release as a test. Only 10 copies were made at RTI using Kaiser vinyl that had been reground from the flash left over from trimming virgin vinyl records hot off the press. The result was as Sax had predicted - the 100% regrind easily beat the 50/50 mix and the 100% virgin pressings handily. According to Hobson, "the regrind sounded more open, the bass detail was better and the high end more extended". The next step was to ask RTI if Classic could switch to 100% regrind which RTI informed Classic would be impossible because there was not enough "flash" produced in the entire plant ( six presses at that time) to supply vinyl for the volume of Classic Records pressings. "It was a sad day" Hobson recalls - "We had to settle for our custom virgin formula knowing that there was something that sounded better but not in large enough quantity to be able to use." This is one of the only known complete copy of this 100% regrind vinyl that survived and it is sealed! Talk about a collectible! Jacket in near mint condition.
It's a rare find -- good luck!
