·       "C" AND THE SHELLS (ALSO KNOWN AS 'THE SANDPEBBLES, THE LEGENDARY 1960s NEW YORK/DETROIT SOUL GROUP) – GOOD MORNING SUNSHINE – INSANELY RARE ORIGINAL 1969 COTILLION STEREO LP (THE TITLE IS IDENTIFIED BY THE WRITING ON THE LABELS AND THE INNER SLEEVE); MATRICES WRITTEN ON THE LABEL: ST-CTN-691612 CTH AND ST-CTN-691611 CTH IDENTIFY THIS TEST PRESSING AS COLUMBIA, TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA PRESSING OF A COTILLION RELEASE.  THE LABEL IDENTIFIES THE CATALOG NUMBER AS SD-9010;  THIS CATALOG WAS NEVER USED FOR A "C" AND THE SHELLS ALBUM; INSTEAD, AFTER THE "C" & THE SHELLS ALBUM WAS SCRAPPED, IT WAS ASSIGNED TO A WHITE PSYCHEDELIC BAND'S SOLE RELEASE ("BLACKWELL") ON COTILLION'S SHORT-LIVED PSYCHEDELIC 'ASTRO' SUBSIDIARY.

From New York City, New York, USA, this vocal group comprised Calvin White, Andrea Bolden and Lonzine Wright. White had been a member of the Gospel Wonders in the early 60s and he brought some robust gospel-style singing to the Sandpebbles when he formed the group. Under the aegis of New York producer Tony Vann, the Sandpebbles enjoyed big hits with ‘Forget It’ (number 10 R&B, number 81 pop) and ‘Love Power’ (number 14 R&B, number 22 pop) for the Calla label in 1967. The Sandpebbles changed their name to C And The Shells in 1968, and produced by Jerry Williams, had a hit with a softer-styled ‘You Are The Circus’ (number 28 R&B) in 1969. C And The Shells left Cotillion in 1970, and joined the tiny Zanzee label, where they recorded with little success. The last release by the group was in 1973.

While this acetate is in a BEAUTIFUL state of preservation, we do expect bidders to understand that the aluminum-based, shellac-coated acetates can never be graded by using the exact, same stringent standards used by collectors for modern long-play, hi-fi LPs or singles. The buyer – if not familiar with acetate (reference) recordings - should be cautioned that these discs were intended for brief, limited use only; they were meant to be played only a few times, then discarded or destroyed. In view of this, the surface layer of the disc is manufactured in such a manner that it will wear off pretty quickly, even under normal conditions -- and specially if not handled with due care. Each subsequent playing increases wear and tear of the disc’s surface layer and diminishes the disc’s playability. This disc appears to have been unplayed recently and the grooves are still well-formed and fully visible.

This acetate is in about VERY GOOD++ condition, with some minor, superficial scuffs. Absolutely NO part of the shellac (surface layer) of the disc is  missing, and the surface layer is NOT dented, chipped, broken or otherwise compromised.   We note the presence of a few dust particles embedded in the grooves, which are possible to remove (we did not attempt to).
