CAIRO FREE JAZZ ESEMBLE: Heliopolis LP (Goethe Institut, Goethe 7037080, 1970)
- DESCRIPTION: Utterly RARE document of the Sun Ra scholar/friend Hartmut Geerken introducing fire music to Egypt. This was recorded a year prior to Geerken inviting Sun Ra to the land of the Pharaohs! On drums, conga and tamburine we have the legendary Salah Ahmed Ragab, the band consists of the avant garde of Egyptan players. The music is a beautiful beast of avant playing. Not the full throttle fire breathing as on records like Frank Wright's Calumet LP "Church Number Nine" or on Arthur Doyle's "Alabama Feeling", this here is more subtle, exploring the quieter parts of the new music, it's already quite close to Sun Ra's avant records that were fully composed (as are the three tracks on here) yet sounded like nothing composed. An amazing record and one that I hate parting with. If it doesnt sell at this price, I|ll glad file it back into the collection.
- CONDITION: Vinyl in EXCELLENT shape, very minor signs of wear, shiny , clean vinyl, plays v clean, sometimes a little "tick" can be heard in the quiet parts, but these appear to be due to the pressing rather than signs of wear.
- The beautiful gatefold-cover has obviously been handled by someone who didnt wash his hands very often. there are a number of visible dirt stains on the front and back sleeve. gatefold inner-spread is very clean though. Would grade conservatively at VG+.
