Chicago-born singer-songwriter Terry Callier reached album number two with Occasional Rain in 1972, moving from folk interpreter to author of his own small urban stories. Charles Stepney wraps the record in baroque orchestration and Callier stitches folk-jazz to soul with that wonderfully elastic voice which holds the seams together. 'Ordinary Joe' comes peppered with soul cries and wordless flourishes, the title track turns bad weather into divine consolation and 'Do You Finally Need A Friend' brings Kitty Haywood and Minnie Riperton into the fold. Folk music with its passport absolutely covered in stamps.
