CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & THE MAGIC BAND

        "TROUT MASK REPLICA"

...USA - (brown) Reprise - STS 1053

............................................................................................

VINTAGE two LP vinyl set in THICK gatefold cover (!)

Folk, rock and blues through a psychedelicized strainer and mixed with an egg beater into odd shapes, adding demented loony coughing up diabolic rantings.
Listening repeatedly, as has been prescribed, waiting for it to grow, and somewhere along the way a few screws go loose in your head....

It is for the legendary 1969 album Trout Mask Replica that the Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band will always be remembered. Its producer Frank Zappa gave his childhood friend Don full artistic freedom for the album, and Don used this opportunity to the fullest.
The double LP, containing 28 songs, contains a unique crossing of everything, but mostly free jazz & blues. Two new members entered the Magic Band; Zoot Horn Rollo (Bill Harkleroad) (guitar, replaced Alex St. Clair) and Rockette Morton (Mark Boston) (bass, replaced Jerry Handly.) Beefheart's cousin Victor Hayden (The Mascara Snake) was also a part time member and contributed free form bass clarinet and vocal.
In preparation for the recording of this album they locked themselves in a small house under Don's lead, strictly rehearsed most hours of the days for approximately nine months in order to manage the extremely intricate compositions, which Don was given full credit for.
Most songs have uneven time meters or no meters at, yet the musicians are locked with each other at all time, and sound routined, but the music is about as far from mainstream you could go. After this exhausting experience, a sick Jeff Cotton left (with two broken ribs).
The album was recorded in four hours.

Instead of replacing Jeff Cotton (or Antennae Jimmy Semens, as he was credited on the album) by another guitarist, Art Tripp III joined on marimba & extra drums. The interplay between guitar and marimba makes Lick My Decals Off, Baby which is in the same style as TMR, but more focused, a unique record.

CONDITION: the gatefold cover still looks pretty good despite a very tiny word at top (very small and light it is) lower left had h20 and well repaired, otherwise just a bit of light wear elsewhere renders a decent look especially under the outer plastic cover whre almost anyone would pick it up with interest

The vinyl records are BOTH highly GLOSSY clean M- with (small) word on label
