CAPTAIN BEEFHEART "Safe As Milk" 1968 UK PYE MONO 1968 MARBLE ARCH ISSUE, G&L FLIPBACK, SOUNDS GREAT
CAPTAIN BEEFHEART AND HIS MAGIC BAND
Safe As Milk
UK PYE/MARBLE ARCH (MAL 1117) *MONO* PRESSING OF CAPTAIN BEEFHEART'S 1968 DEBUT LP "Safe As Milk" - IN GREAT CONDITION DELIVERING CRYSTAL CLEAR, CLEAN, SHARP AND FRESH AUDIO (ON MY SYSTEM - AT A LOUD VOLUME!) - VERY NICE COPY INDEED - SOUNDS SUPERB
Originally issued in Feb 1968 on Pye International to no public interest and hardly any sales (the label dropped the band and Beefheart's next LP 'Strictly Personal' would be issued on Liberty). Pye decided to reissued the LP in late 1968 on their budget Marble Arch series (although the label still mistakenly states Pye International) to try and regain some of their loses. This release drops two of the tracks from the original issue - "I'm Glad" and "Grown So Ugly" (no idea why!) but even as a budget release it still failed to gain momentum and sold in very small numbers
PRESSED ON QUALITY HEAVYWEIGHT VINYL (very thick and chunky) WITH THE FIRST BLUE/BLACK PYE INTERNATIONAL LABELS
MATRIX NUMBERS: MAL 1117 A-1 *T / MAL 1117 B-1 *T
THE LP IS HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL FRONT LAMINATED TRI- FLIPBACK SLEEVE "Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. patent No. 943,895”
AND COMES COMPLETE WITH THE ORIGINAL PLAIN WHITE DIE-CUT INNER SLEEVE
Beefheart's first proper studio album is a much more accessible, pop-inflected brand of Delta blues-rock than the efforts that followed in the late '60s -- which isn't to say that it's exactly normal and straightforward.
Featuring Ry Cooder on guitar, this is blues-rock gone slightly askew, with jagged, fractured rhythms, soulful, twisting vocals from Van Vliet, and more doo-wop, soul, straight blues, and folk-rock influences than he would employ on his more avant-garde outings.
"Zig Zag Wanderer," "Call on Me," and "Yellow Brick Road" are some of his most enduring and riff-driven songs, although there's plenty of weirdness on tracks like "Electricity" and "Abba Zaba."
A truly remarkable album.
SIDE 1: Sure Nuff N Yes I Do / Zig Zag Wanderer / Call On Me / Dropout Boogie / Electricity
SIDE 2: Yellow Brick Road / Abba Zaba / Plastic Factory / Where There's A Woman / Autumns Child
LABELS: The labels are clean, bright, fresh and unmarked with moderate spindles evident when angled to the light - played but carefully handled
VINYL Visual: Both surfaces retain their original deep, glossy sheen and are practically unmarked - there are what appear to be some light pressing blemishes within the vinyl itself but these have no audio consequence - the playback is superb
VINYL Audio: Sensational Mono audio delivery - crystal clear and sharp (and quite rough which gives the LP a very immediate feel) and on playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing) there are no scratches, no sticks or jumps, barley any clicks or pops (hardly any and none which rise above background or are worthy of a special mention) and no surface noise (there is a some hiss on the run-ins on the extreme edges which I only noticed on my second play (this is well before the music starts and has no effect on the playback). This is an excellent copy and the whole LP plays beautifully throughout with superb clarity, no groove-wear, no distortion, sounds great and is strictly graded a strong EXCELLENT to (+) for audio - very nice copy indeed
SLEEVE: The original tri-flipback sleeve is in EXCELLENT condition (at least). The front laminate has a beautiful unrubbed deep glossy sheen and the unlaminated back is remarkably clean with no marks/writing and no damage to the flipback sections. There whole sleeve is crisp and sharp with no creasing and no storage rubbing to the edges and the spine (which is 'pinched' at the top and bottom) displays all text clear and bold - lovely example
