CAPTAIN BEEFHEART and HIS MAGIC BAND

JERRY HANDLEY, JOHN FRENCH, ALEX ST. CLAIRE SNOUFFER, CAPTAIN BEEFHEART

and RY COODER, TAJ MAHAL, MILT HOLLAND, RUSS TITELMAN, SAM HOFFMAN

Influential figure who fused disparate forms (free jazz, the avant-garde, blues, rock) into a highly original and nearly unclassifiable style. Born Don Vliet, Captain Beefheart was one of modern music's true innovators.  The owner of a remarkable four-and-a-half-octave vocal range, he employed idiosyncratic rhythms, absurdist lyrics,  and an unholy alliance of free jazz, Delta blues, latter-day classical music, and rock & roll to create a singular  body of work virtually unrivaled in its daring and fluid creativity. While he never came even remotely  close to mainstream success, Beefheart's impact was incalculable,  and his fingerprints were all over punk, new wave, and post-rock

NOTES ABOUT THE LABEL & THE COVER:

[according with Golmine (5th Edition) Guide to Collectible Record Album]

From 1968 until the multi-color label had a silhouette of a Buddah on the bottom.

This version: housed in a "Mono" outer sleeve despite being in a stereo format.

Paste over front cover is typically aligned "lower" on the cardboard sleeve

to expose BDS 5001 on upper right corner and STEREO in upper left corner.

This lowered front pasted slick then hides BDM 1001 (which is wrapped onto back

cover and then pasted over with the back cover slick) for stereo releases.

The Buddah Records logo thus appears lower on the front cover for stereo releases

than it does for mono releases. The exemplar cover for this release

with the oval "stereo" sticker and exposed BDM 1001 was likely to utilize

overstocked "mono" covers for a repressed stereo record.

No custom inner sleeve or bumper sticker included with exemplar.

"BDS 5001" on label indicates stereo.

"BDM 1001" on sleeve indicates mono.

Disc matrix etchings of BDS-5001-1 on A side and BDS-5001-2 on B side indicate stereo release.

Oval stereo sticker on front of sleeve

THICK CARDBOARD COVER (AMERICAN STYLE)

SMALL CUT-HOLE WITH METAL-RING (TOP LEFT CORNER)

RECORD  NEAR EX but (please, read above description)

SLEEVE STRONG VG+ but (please, see pictures and read above description)

Beefheart's first proper studio album is a much more accessible, pop-inflected brand of blues-rock

than the efforts that followed in the late '60s -- which isn't to say that it's exactly normal and straightforward.

Featuring Ry Cooder on guitar, this is blues-rock gone slightly askew, with jagged, fractured rhythms,

soulful, twisting vocals from Van Vliet, and more doo wop, soul, straight blues,

and folk-rock influences than he would employ on his more avant-garde outings.

"Zig Zag Wanderer," "Call on Me," and "Yellow Brick Road" are some

of his most enduring and riff-driven songs, although there's plenty

of weirdness on tracks like "Electricity" and "Abba Zaba." ...(AllMusic)
