Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band - Trout Mask Replica 1969 with gatefold cover
This vinyl comes direct from the master tape - not digitally remastered. It’s been in my husband’s care from 1969 to present. It is an original Straight 1053 Double LP, UK 1969 ultra rare stereo 1st press and plays fine.
Matrices : Side A : STS 1053 A1, Side B : STS 1053 B1, Side C : STS 1053 C1, and Side D : STS 1053 D1 (The earliest original 1st uk pressing features the original 'Straight' labels with the earliest matrix endings possible for this pressing A1,B1,C1,D1).
Records
Played probably a handful of times. They are the best condition I’ve seen for a late 1960s vinyl. They have a number of very light, wispy hairline inner sleeve traces, visible in strong angled light but not as many as one may expect. Side 1 a 0.8 cm light scratch / mark and side 2 a light mark 2cm which wouldn’t be felt with a fingernail and took a moment for me to find again when describing to you. No scratches or marks that I believe would cause any loud clicks or pops. Side 3 and side 4 even better – not too many wispy hairlines and both sides a 0.8cm light mark. According to the Record Collector’s grading system vinyl 1 would be a VG+ and vinyl 2 excellent. (Please note that I am a careful grader - a VG could actually be an excellent!)
Sleeve
Original 1st press unlaminated "E.J Day" gatefold sleeve in a pretty square and undamaged condition - most are spent, torn and worn due to age and the lifestyles of the buyers of this particular LP! No tears, real dulling and minimal discolouration, writing, graffiti, or bad marks. This sleeve only has signs of ageing such as ringwear on the outside (see image), a few tiny light creases, fading to the spine colour making it light pink (unavoidable with this sleeve) and just a touch of denting to the mainly the spine corners. No marks on image faces. Inner sleeves look pretty white!
The spine is three quarters square with top corner and edge rubbed away and starting to peel. Not split. The photo shows where it is rubbing on back cover and its not a tear. Trout Mask Replica is hard to read. Can read Captain Beeftheart but still here the writing is rubbing away. Sleeve condition VG-.
Labels :
Classic UK 1st Press smooth pink Straight Records labels with orange, white and black writing. No writing, stickers, or tears. Just a few ultra light spindle marks and side 3 slightly rubbed around hole. Incredible for a 42 year old record! Must grade overall as excellent.
