Description
Caravan original 1970 UK LP Decca SKL-R 5052 'If I Could Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You', stereo.
The single sleeve has a laminated front which wraps back past the spine so protecting it. It's in strong solid shape with no seam splits. rips or writing. These plain backs always attract grubbiness to varying degrees over the years but this one isn't too bad as the photo shows. What blemishes there are include some mild corner rubs and ringwear, a touch of laminate age shrinkage in a few places (very common) and an original 'Special Offer' price sticker which has 'run' and also caused a small ding in the cover (obviously this album was hanging around unsold in the shop!).
For the sleeve then I rate it 7.75 /10 in recognition of the mainly cosmetic flaws.
The Decca polythene lined blue and white inner sleeve feels clean and fresh in the hands which belies its' age. It's strong with intact seams and nothing much to say against it apart from some corner creasing and a very mild hint of age browning to the paper.
On to the flat and shiny vinyl which weighs in at 133g on my digital scale. Matrices on the dead wax run-offs are ZAL-9752.P-3W and ZAL9753.P-5W for Sides 1 and 2 respectively.
Lovely clean blue and silver labels with a sharp hole. Under a bright lamp Side 2 label shows some light spindle traces but none that I can see on the label for Side 1. So I reckon the original owner placed the record on a turntable to listen to the first tracks and didn't go much further. Each to his own!
This would tie in with the condition of the vinyl which is very clean. Angling the disc in room daylight at the window it looks super. And even under a cruel and unforgiving LED light I can only pick out a few ever-so-light scuffs and hairlines which I put down to 'storage' over the lifetime of the record. So visually I'm happy to give it 9 /10.
Next is a sound check on the Linn / Naim hi-fi system. From the get-go I'm not hearing much if any surface noise or ticks even on the dead bands before and between the tracks. Certainly no pops, skips or other intruders. Dare I say that to my ears it plays superb so aurally I'm giving the disc a confident 9/10.
