Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive. Spindle marks are relatively few in number, fine and faint on side one, a few thicker on side two, but even these show little with normal viewing. The record itself if very impressive and offer fantastic clean sound.

Brief Info: Caravan’s fourth album with a somewhat eye-catching cover. It introduces Steve Miller on keyboards that gave the band a slightly more jazzier sound. Classic vintage prog-rock from one England’s finest. A lovely clean very early example and superbly pressed Deram record. This one should please most collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD(++): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace. The inside has references to mono and stereo recordings even though the single channel format had by now disappeared. Also reference to the long defunct 8-track cartridges of the time. This includes the Decca-style lined inner sleeve.

Cover Front & Back This cover actually looks way better than my grading but it does have a relatively small flaw on the back. A fairly discrete rub and small hole near the left edge near the centre. This only affects the actual back card and no other surface has it. A small sticker has been placed inside the record storage area to fill. The eye is hardly even drawn to the area with no important area of graphic affected either. But a flaw is a flaw, and I would have graded this still attractive cover more excellent without it. The front has a small rub (or sticker tear) near the top right corner, again its position makes it discrete, this being only quite small and minor. This small mark apart, the front has little else to fault being clean, fresh with minimal creasing at all. Overall, the back is similar with any rim rubbing gentle, little and light, on quite thin card, this is a plus. The aforementioned small hole/rub is just to the left of the hand near the glass right on the left edge area. Clearly not the purists, but this cover is still attractive and only with a certain amount of close scrutiny, do the flaws show themselves.

Cover Inner Gatefold: A somewhat spectacular gatefold inner with little to fault and our Lily will seldom be seen looking better.

Top Edges: Both straight, flush and neat, any rubbing is light and very patchy, very little present.

Bottom Edges: Moderate less patchy rubbing on these storage edges.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear, any thickening minimal and light, both are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced. Record enters on this back edge.

Spine and Text: Quite a wide spine which is solid, straight, with little compression but a gentle tilt to right. Folded square, so the edges meet up closely together and parallel. All text is present and strong, any rubbing to the main surface or folds very little and light, a little near the bottom.

Corners: Moderate tip rubbing with fine to near very fine shape retained, no knocks and all reasonably neat.

Cover Summary: Not so easy grading a cover with a couple of flaw, but for looks this still sets a high standard. As stated, not for purists or the more discerning. The small damage on the back left edge is what it is – damage – even though quite discrete and small. But for sure, there will be a lot worse than this around and as can be seen, this is still a very nice example of a relatively scarce cover.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): date-coded 8-72 (August 1972) and with little wear at all. Two crisp untorn window circles, the polylining clear and fresh. Barely any creasing and no edge splits or repairs. Minimal darkening of the seam adhesive which is quite unusual.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or very close to. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with fine shine and quite heavily pressed on thick Deram/Decca vinyl. Played a few times if the spindle marks are to be believed but it appears with reasonable care and this record plays impressively with clean sound and very little unwanted. Under my grading lamp, light, fine and mostly small surface marks are seen but no penetrating stylus scratches. Visually an impressive record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant Deram album plays even above its high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear with no tracking issues*. Sound quality is fantastic with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound and a top-quality production. Any surface sounds minimal to none and this is an exceptional clean pressing as you would expect from any Deram record (pressed by Decca). Few available copies will better this significantly I feel sure. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this prog-rock gem. This copy could prove very difficult to find significantly better as a true original and can be highly recommended. Neither cover or record for visual perfectionists, but for sound this remains impressive and delivers.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
