CARL DREVO & CLARKE-BOLAND BIG BAND Swing, Waltz, Swing (Philips 840 246 PY) German 1st Pressing MINT
RARE very first German pressing of Carl Drevo and the Clarke-Boland Big Band album "Swing, Waltz, Swing" on Philips Records (May 1966).
Cover art by German illustrator Heinz Edelmann (1934-2009), famed for his work on Yellow Submarine and XTC`s "Oranges And Lemons" album. "Swing, Waltz, Swing" was produced by legendary producer Gigi Campi.
"This German Big Band with no Germans has sold its records so far mainly in the United States. (...) The musicians who were gathered in the Cologne studio were: Kenny Clarke, from Paris, one of the founders of the Modern Jazz quartet, Bebop-father and together with Art Blakey and Max Roach one of the most significant jazz-drummers ever. Francis Boland, the sensitive pianist and arranger from Namur, who successively worked with Aim‚ Barelli, Count Basie, Woody Hermann, Kurt Edelhagen and Werner Mller, who also became well-known over the Belgian border. From Stockholm came the trombonist Ake Persson and the baritone-saxophonist Sahib Shihab, who this time produced together with Sadi from Belgium the incredible introduction for the "Spring Voices Waltz" on the flute. Trumpeter Benny Bailey left Munich and met in Cologne with Jimmy Deuchar (England), Dusko Gojkovic (Yugoslavia), Shake Keane (Jamaica), Nat Peck (USA), Derek Humble (England) and Sal Nistico (Italy). Heading them all off is the Viennese tenor saxophonist Carl Drevo, who demonstrates here a profile befitting the sounds of his home country. What they produce is powerful swinging music with a fresh sound, applying to melodies of former times a beaming gleam of today and adding lavish Big Band jewelry to the compositions." - Adapted from the original liner notes.
