This timely release from Friday Music coincides with Carly Simon's recent top-selling autobiography "Boys In The Trees: A Memoir." This original Elektra Records classic is now mastered impeccably by Joe Reagoso (Carly Simon, James Taylor, Hall & Oates). "Her career revitalized by the success of 'Nobody Does It Better,' the theme from The Spy Who Loved Me, Carly Simon returned to record-making with this classy Arif Mardin-produced session, backed by New York's best studio players (Steve Gadd, Eric Gale, Will Lee, Richard Tee, David Sanborn, the Brecker Brothers, etc.). Simon reached the Top Ten with 'You Belong to Me,' a collaboration with Michael McDonald that showed both off at their best, and the album's other Top 40 single was another duet with husband James Taylor on the old Everly Brothers hit 'Devoted to You.' Taylor also turned up writing and singing elsewhere to good effect. But what really made the album a winner was that Simon had had a couple of years to write some strong songs in her unflinching, reflective style, and she continued to explore the loves and mores of her age and class movingly." — AllMusic

Carly Simon is truly one of the greatest exponents of the singer/songwriter boom that rocked the seventies music scene when she debuted her first hit single That’s the Way I’ve Always Heard It Should Be in 1970. Carly’s stunning artistry and her smash hits continue to be some of the most played on radio stations worldwide, as witnessed in her classic 1974 platinum chart topper Hotcakes.

The 1974 smash LP features several of her biggest hit singles like Mockingbird which features James Taylor, as well as one of the finest songs of that year Haven’t Got Time for the Pain. Masterworks like Misfit, Forever My Love and Just Not True surely make Hotcakes one of the most revered albums in Carly Simon’s stellar career.

Friday Music announces another fine installment in the Carly Simon/Friday Music 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Series with her masterpiece Hotcakes.

First Time on Vinyl!

In April 1995 commuters walking through Grand Central were pleasantly surprised to stumble upon Carly Simon and her band performing a full, unannounced concert in the middle of the main terminal. The concert - Simon’s first in fourteen years - was filmed and aired on Lifetime for a television special which was released on VHS later that year.

This legendary surprise concert at New York's Grand Central Terminal is released on vinyl for the first time. The audio has been remixed by multi-Grammy Award-winning producer and engineer, Frank Filipetti and remastered.

Born and raised in New York City, Simon is a Grammy-award winning musician, singer-songwriter and author whose career spans over five decades. In the '70s Simon had a string of chart-topping hit singles including the beloved "You're So Vain," which reached #1, as well as "Anticipation," "Nobody Does It Better," "Coming Around Again," "Mockingbird" with James Taylor and more. Simon has received an Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, received the Berklee College of Music Honorary Doctor of Music Degree and has been nominated for a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

"Another Passenger" isn't one of Carly Simon's more popular albums. There's no big single (the Anita Baker-ish "Half a Chance" didn't make much of a dent on radio), it wasn't a huge seller, and it didn't even boast one of those sexy album covers she's so well known for. It is, however, one of her most impressive outings as a songwriter.

The songs on "Passenger" have even more depth and character than her usual fare, if that can even be imagined. The character studies laid over the breezy calypso of "He Likes to Roll" and the saloon jazz of "Riverboat Gambler" are the work of an adept enough writer, but the biting takes on the pretentious heroine of "Dishonest Modesty" are laugh-out-loud clever ("And you can House and Garden/Vogue and Glamour, Mademoiselle/but I know you can Bitch and Screw/and Penthouse just as well"). "Fairweather Father" and "Cow Town" tell tales of modern women in less-than-perfect relationships (the former featuring an underappreciated domestic goddess and the latter featuring a gold-digger whose payoff is lucrative but lonely), and the Elton John-esque "Libby" is a touching ode to a longtime friend and kindred spirit.

However, love pains from a first-person point of view have often been the subject of Simon's best work, and this record is no exception. "Darkness Til Dawn" is a touching account of coping with the end of an affair; when Simon sings "my brain won't stop showin' those old movies of you," the longing and resignation in her voice make for one of her most striking moments. And the lesser-heard masterpiece "In Times When My Head" tells a stingingly sad tale of a woman so confident in her importance to her lover that she has an indiscretion, naturally leading to guilt that breeds insecurity. The chorus features a killer hook, but with lyrics like "although that boy meant nothing to me/I believe I've lost the simple thrill/of the times when my head was together about you," it's pretty clear that this is too deep for your average FM station.

The album's only less-than-necessary experience is the lightweight "One Love Stand," a pop shuffle that's agreeable enough but outclassed by the material that surrounds it. All is forgiven, though, when even the album's sole remake is a strong artistic statement: her slow-burn reading of the Doobie Brothers' "It Keeps You Runnin" is a textbook example of how to give a sultry vocal performance.

Sadly, it's all too often that some of an artist's best work goes unrecognized because it's too sophisticated for the masses. But at least die-hard Carly Simon fans who dig deeper than radio hits can reap the benefits of this hidden treasure.
