Carnivore’s self-titled debut album stands as a ferocious slab of crossover thrash, hardcore punk, and speed metal aggression, delivered with the nihilistic humor and brutal power that would come to define frontman Peter Steele’s early career. Released in 1985, Carnivore captures a raw, apocalyptic energy, blending the punk fury of bands like Discharge with the metallic precision of early Metallica and the guttural, dystopian themes that would later echo in Steele’s later work with Type O Negative.
Musically, Carnivore is a relentless onslaught of chainsaw riffs, pummeling drums, and snarling, barbaric vocals. Songs like "Predator," "Male Supremacy," and "Armageddon" attack with a primitive force, mixing thrash metal speed, New York hardcore toughness, and a post-apocalyptic, Mad Max-style aesthetic that paints vivid, violent pictures of survivalism, war, and social decay.
