"Carolina" Charlie Wiggs
"Letter From Home" b/w "S.R.O. (When I Die)"
Pussy Cat Records 007006 ? released in 1960s
This record features "Carolina" Charlie Wiggs, who began singing and playing in country music bands after he graduated from high school in 1949. A-side is a bizarre letter to Vietnam GI about life at home written by Hank Penny.
Wiggs always envisioned himself a radio announcer, and from his first day on the job as a disc jockey, he had his finger on the country music scene.m"I guess I knew how to play the right records," said Wiggs in typical modest fashion. "The first song I played, someone called up the station and told me, `That's the kind of music we want to hear.' "
Wiggs was working as an insurance agent when he enrolled in a radio course offered by WCMS-AM (1050) in 1961. Within two days, they put him on the air. He worked at WCMS (which by 1963 was simulcasting on both AM and FM frequencies) from 1961 until 1976, where his afternoon show was the most popular on any radio station in the area.
Wiggs was also singing and playing with The Four Cs, which was the No. 1 country group in the area. Wiggs had joined with Earl Clark and Cliff Gallup to form "The Three Cs." They added Eddie Jones, changed his name to Casey, and made it "The Four Cs. Rockabilly legend Gene Vincent's original band, The Blue Caps featured the phenomenal lead guitar of "Gallopin'" Cliff Gallup. His fluid and exciting playing style was a big part of what made Vincent's early singles such as "Be Bop a Lula" and "Race With the Devil" Rockabilly classics.
The Four C's recorded in Norfolk, Virginia, for the Pussy Cat label. "We used to work the East Coast, from Myrtle Beach to the Brooklyn (N.Y.) Navy Yard, playing mostly U.S. service clubs," said Wiggs. "We thought we were in show business. We traveled in a motor home, drinking Jack Daniels and telling the driver which way to go."
After the band broke up in 1969, Wiggs played in other bands, including "The Heavy Cowboys." Over the years, he's been the opening act for most of the Grand Ole Opry stars.
