CASHMAN VAQUERO BAND/ MEMORY OF BERRY OAKLEY Doug Cashman put this album together in 1978 and was self-promoting it back in 1978. It’s his first LP that has not been circulated much. As Doug live in Frisco back then and use to come to Macon to visit where his old Chicago friend had lived. He knew Berry around Chicago before the Allman Brothers or Second Coming Band. Condition-This Record is sealed, this is Mint. I included a review written when it came out and the sleeve notes ….. Review CASHMAN VAQUERO BAND IN MEMORY OF BERRY OAKLEY (WALNUT WEST) WITH THE MODERN DAY ONSLAUGHT OF CHICAGOLAND'S LOCAL MUSICAL TALENTS, IT WOULD BE VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO JUDGE EVERY BAND THAT WAS LAID TRACKS AT THE AREA'S RECORDING STUDIOS. IT WAS IMPORTANT FOR THE CASHMAN VAOUERO BAND TO COME UP WITH SOMETHING BIG. THE ALBUM BEGINS WITH A SONG WRITTEN BY JOHN MAYALL CALLED 'CALIFORNIA'. THIS TUNE BOASTS AN INDESCRIBABLE ROCK BACK BEAT, A RONNIE VAN ZANT STYLED SET OF VOCALS BY DOUG CASHMAN AND A FINE SELECTION OF CELLO WORKS BY GAEL ALCOCK. THE SECOND CUT 1S A 'SWAMP BLUES" NUMBER CALLED 'DOWN IN THE BELLY", THIS TUNE FEATURES A TERRIFIC BLUES SLIDE GUITAR BY JOEL MANCMAK, WHICH IS WELL BLENDED INTO WILL PASKETT'S PERFECTLY CONSISTENT PIANO SOLO. IT’S CONSISTENT SO AS TO MAINTAIN THE SAME BASIC RUN AS MANCHAK THUS PRESERVING A STIMULATED ARRANGEMENT. 'DRIVIN, ME CRAZY" BEGINS ACOUSTICALLY AND MAINTAINS A NICE AND SENSIBLE MELODY. BOB LEE 1S FEATURED ON A DELIBERATELY LAID BACK PEDAL STEEL THAT GIVES THE TUNE ITS EVIDENT CHARACTER. "SECURITY", CONTAINS A GOOD BASS BACK BEAT THAT OBVIOUSLY MAINTAINS THE TIME IN THE SONG NOT ONLY FOR THE CONTINUITY OF THE COMPOSITION, BUT FOR THE MUSICIANS AS WELL. A WELL-PACED LEAD BY JAMES VINCENT IS ALSO FEATURED THROUGHOUT THE NUMBER. A LITTLE LATER ON IN THE ALBUM IS A SONG CALLED 'MOUNTAIN PEAK". SOUNDING MUCH LIKE STEELY DAN, THE SONG FEATURES A FEW IMPRESSIVE UNDISTORTED GUITAR RIFFS BY JAMES VINCENTI AS WELL AS SOME IMPRESSIVE BASS RUNS BY RON SADUS "THERE'S NO TELLIN" IS A SONG THAT DISPLAYS A GENUINE BASS BACK BEAT WELL MIXED WITH A RAMBLING PIANO BY WILL PASKETT. ABOUT MID WAY THROUGH THE COMPOSITION THE SONG TAKES A CHANGE OF PACE AND IT GIVES AN OPPORTUNITY TO EACH MEMBER OF THE BAND TO DISPLAY HIS ABILITIES. THE TITLE CUT, 'IN MEMORY OF BERRY OAKLEY" IS A MODERATELY PACED DEDICATION. LYRICALLY, THE SONG MAINTAINS AN INTERESTING CHANGE OF IDEA. INSTEAD OF MOURNING OUR LOSS THE BAND PRAISES OAKLEY'S ACHIEVEMENTS, AN INTERESTING YET LACKING IDEA BY LYRICISTS PRESENTLY WRITING DEDICATIONS. THE ALBUM ENDS WITH A NICE TUNE ENTITLED "SAN FRANCISCO SUNSET". THE TUNE EXHIBITS A SLOWLY INCLINING PACED INSTRUMENTAL WITH A MILDLY DISTORTED DISPLAY OF GUITAR BRILLIANCE BY JAMES VINCENT. PERHAPS AD-LIBBING AT TIMES THE SONG PROVES TO BE A "VERY ORIGINAL" COMPOSITION. THE CASHMAN VAQUERO BAND DISPLAYS AN UNLIMITED ARRAY OF MUSICAL TASTES. IT'S HARD TO BELIEVE THAT A BAND CAN BE S0 SINCERE WITHOUT BEING ABSURD. Doug now lives outside Taos New Mexico, Sleeve Notes On the seventh hour of the seventh day on the seventh month a very close friend passed on ... Ron Sadus he along with Berry Oakley formed the rhythm section of a backyard garage band that got its roots on Bob Guziejka's ranch. They rocked Park Forest &Chicago Hts. down in 63' & 64'. Berry Oakley eventually moved on down to Florida playing Chicago Blues. He originally started as a lead guitarist playing and old strat. Berry had always been a teacher, teaching most of the bass players he performed with. When asked to play bass by a top southern band he acknowledged, because he was a natural guitarist. His phrasing inspired some great guitarists of his day. The ideas he gave paved the way for bass as a lead instrument. Berry & Ron are both gone, but their music will always be around .
