CATAPILLA Same UK Vertigo swirl label; plays superbly

Welcome! Here is a first UK press of Catapilla (Vertigo 6360 029). On this, the first of Catapilla’s two albums, the lineup was Anna Meek, Thierry Reinhardt, Hugh Eaglestone, Robert Calvert, Dave Taylor, Malcolm Frith, and Graham Wilson. This example includes the correct “0371” date-coded Vertigo inner sleeve.

Matrix numbers and mother/stamper codes are:

Using the Record Collector grading system, what do we have here?

Sleeve: The sleeve grades VG+, with minor wear to all edges, corners, and spine. There is visible but still minor ring wear to the back of the sleeve. Both front and back have average surface wear. The inside gatefold has some stains (water?) near the top, and light general soiling. So, if you are seeking a pristine cover, this isn’t it, but I am a very condition-conscious person myself and this cover has been acceptable to me. Note that the Catapilla sleeve has a nice finish, similar to other Vertigo swirl albums such as May Blitz and Gentle Giant Acquiring the Taste.

Vinyl: The vinyl easily grades Excellent+, with only a couple of marks on the vinyl, which do not affect play. There are not even any hairlines!

Labels: Both labels are strong, with average spindle tracking on both labels. Vertigo Esoterica: Even though Vertigo issued another 2 or 3 albums after Catapilla that had a “large” swirl on the Side 2 label, Catapilla was ONLY issued with a “small” swirl. So, if you are looking for a Catapilla with a large swirl, forget it, because it does not exist!

Inner Sleeve: This album has its original plastic-lined Vertigo inner sleeve, with the correct “0371” date code. This inner sleeve is certainly age-toned, but has no splits or other detriments. The plastic lining remains firmly attached to the paper.

And, in the end: Do you like jazzy, sax-driven rock? If so, you will really like this rare album. Do you like pleasant, soothing vocals? If so, you will really HATE this rare album! Anna Meek can be harmless at times, but, wow, when she’s wound up, she is Primal Scream personified. This girl is wild, folks! Makes me think of a Dagmar Krause who is having a REALLY bad day, is REALLY drunk, and is REALLY angry. And Anna looks so adorable in the photo on the inside gatefold! Anyway, the sleeve of this example of Catapilla may not satisfy a perfectionist, but the vinyl plays very well and this album should be fine for most people. Please e-mail me with any questions.
