Description

Celebration: "Old Green Village" 1976?, France/No Label KO 76.0515. Disc has some hairlines from dust in the inner sleeve, it looks like it would play M- but I heard a bit of light surface noise on playback, so it gets an EX grade. Cover is handmade, this is silkscreened on the front only, back side is blank, no splits, some light soiling, it gets an EX grade as well. No way to find another copy of this LP at all, let alone a better example! Ultra-rare private European folk LP, this was pressed in France but nothing is known about the band so they could be from anywhere. The vocals are all in English, and one of the lead singers sounds like he could be British... or even an American. All acoustic instruments: 6 and 12 string guitars, mandolin, flute, autoharp, and there are some female background vocals. It looks like a 70s pressing to me, and the catalog number is where I came up with the guess on the date. Whereas most European folk albums sound like they were recorded by well-fed university students on professional equipment, this LP has a certain pagan vibe that reminds me of the German Kalacakra LP. Some of the tracks sound like they were recorded on a lo-fi portable tape deck, a la Stone Harbour. It wouldn't surprise me if it turns out this bunch were homeless, living communally in tents in the woods by night and busking in the streets by day. You get the distinct impression that they must've smelled bad when you play it. It's a creepy, almost Halloween-ish record; I think the artwork suits the music nicely. One-off chance to put this one in your library, I doubt I'll ever see another and it may never be offered again!
